Are sony products compatible with mac osx?
See I bought this Sony Handycam DCR-SR42 and there is no software stuff for Mac OS X. I called SONY and they really couldn’t help. Then I called Apple And you know how they are, I waited for more than an our on the phone and I wasn’t gonna waist my money on my phone for a camcorder.
Yes, the hard drive based DCR-SR42 works just fine with Apple Macintosh computers and OSX and iMovie.

to deal with the MPEG 2 files from the internal hard drive based camcorder you are using.
Warning: The amount of compression this camera uses to store the video onto that hard drive will result in not so good video. This has nothing to do with your computer (Mac or Windows based) and everything to do with the compression applied to the video stored on the camcorder’s hard drive.
Since the camcorder connects with USB, it will appear as an icon on the desktop when you connect it correctly, Copy the files like you were copying any other file from one disc to another.
Warning: If you recorded a video clip longer than twenty minutes, it will be split into multiple clips of 20 minutes each… that is… a 23 minute clip will be one 20 minute clip and a 3 minute clip. A 44 minute clip will be two 20 minute clips and a 4 minute clip. This is a consumer hard drive camcorder issue and has nothing to do with the computer or operating system.

That “best buy employee” is incorrect. I have been editing video from various camcorders – Sony, Canon and Panasonic – for years. The easiest and best quality video comes from miniDV tape based camcorders – that is a function of the DV and HDV compression used to store the video on the miniDV tape. This is the same across all camcorder manufacturers.
I have captured, transferred and edited MPEG2 (standard definition) and AVCHD (high-definition) compressed video from hard drive and flash memory based camcorders – they use the same compression – on my Macintoshes. I have Windows computers, too – but I do all my video editing on my Macs. I have edited DVD camcorder video only twice (and only standard definition). The video from those camcorders is such poor quality, I refuse to edit video from that type of camcorder – it is as bad on Windows as it is on Macs so I know this is not a computer issue, but a storage media and compression issue.
Just because there is no “bundled” software with the camcorder does not mean it is not compatible. It just means you need to look in a different place for the software tools.
